CAPE 40 5G
The class 40 design rule has been in existence for 10 years and has achieved remarkable success with almost 150 boats, from various designers having being built.
The class ethic is to provide a fast, easy to sail boat that is thoroughly capable of crossing oceans, yet with costs being strictly controlled to ensure easy access to the class.
Owen Clarke Design have been associated with the class for an extensive period and have achieved some notable successes with their designs. Their vast experience in designing short-handed yachts for Corinthians, as well as out and out professionals, means that it was a straightforward task for them to come up with a design that meets the four elements of Cape Racing Yachts focus areas of: Safety, Ease of sailing, Speed and Fun.
The latest 3rd and 4th generation class 40 designs have shown a maturity in the development of the class, with designs now being optimised for a particular set of conditions. Typically Class 40’s optimised for Transatlantic conditions are beamy, full bowed hulls that excel in reaching conditions. Other class 40 have narrower water lines that are focused in up and down wind conditions with lower wind ranges.
The Cape 40 5G (5th generation) does not occupy either of these extremes, but the middle ground with a hull form that is broad enough to reach well, but also with a low wetted surface area to hold its own in lighter wind conditions. The conditions this hull form will excel in are those typically encountered in the Fastnet and Normandy Channel Races.
The Cape 40 5G is thus a multiuse design with a sailplan, deck layout and interior that is a development of the best 3rd and 4th generation designs. Winches are placed to allow easy and constant trimming single or double handed, but with enough space for a crew of 4 or 5 when needed.
